Last year, UPLB student Given Grace Cebanico was raped and killed in Los Baños, Laguna. Suspects were arrested just days after the crime, but the trial is still on-going as they pleaded “not guilty” in the rape-with-homicide case on May 2012. The UPLB community was further shocked when, months after the heinous crime, a young girl was raped and murdered near the campus and a student was killed in a robbery attempt in the same town. These drew attention to the lack of public safety in campuses and to the local government’s flawed leadership, but what we condemn the most is what we believe to be the worst gender-based crime—rape.
Organizing a series of events for Given will not only help her family fund the long legal trials, but also put forward our vigilance against all forms of violence against women. Our main events are “The Run for Given” (UP Diliman) and Bikers’ Protest Ride (UPLB), along with gigs, exhibits, and bazaar.
The Protest Ride, as the name implies, will serve to mobilize the UPLB community into collective condemnation of violence; the culminating event, The Run for Given, on the other hand, takes this symbolic action outside Los Baños to raise public awareness to a higher level.
Such activities are meant to strike a reminder that gender-based violence should not be taken for granted, forgiven, nor forgotten. Violence is not a given.
